Kraft paper is one of the most widely used materials in industries and has good strength. Besides being resistant, it is also a versatile material and can be used in the manufacture of boxes (cardboard), envelopes, bags, bread bags, among others.
Kraft paper can also be produced with specific finishes such as aluminum foil, paraffin-coated or plastic resins.
Kraft paper: how it is produced
Kraft paper is produced through a blend of various types of cellulose fibers found in softwood. And it is precisely this fiber blend that makes kraft paper so strong and yet flexible and soft.
Pulp used in kraft paper generally does not go through the bleaching process, like most other common paper types. That’s why it commonly has a brown color, which is its natural color.
Kraft paper and its variations.
Kraft paper has some variations, but in all of them the main characteristic is the resistance. These include natural, white, color, extendable, premium or second-rate.
Kraft paper variations vary according to their manufacture, the types of fibers used and the level of strength. Another factor that also goes into the variation of kraft paper is its finish.
Kraft paper can also be used as a raw material in the manufacturing process of some specific objects, such as corrugated board, for example.
Where kraft paper is used
Kraft paper can be used in many places, depending on the variations we just saw. But in general it is used for the manufacture of bags, tote bags, packaging and wrapping.
Natural kraft paper, for example, is very common in industry, used in packaging for large products, due to its high strength. It is also used mainly in the oil bath or dry transformer industry, as well as in the construction of capacitors, switches, coils and others.
Another type of widely used kraft paper is extensible. It is made from long cellulose fiber and is suitable for the manufacture of paper bags. First and second grade kraft papers are similar, with one being slightly tougher than the other.
Kraft Paper Weight
Another feature that differs the types of kraft paper manufactured is its weight, ie the density of the paper. Weight varies by paper purpose. It is linked to its thickness. For example, sulfite papers, commonly used in offices, are typically between 90g and 115g. Already the sheets of newspapers, vary between 35g and 55g.
White kraft paper, for example, which is used in the manufacture of bags and packaging, needs a weight of about 30g. Already kraft paper commonly used in industries, which is the case of multi-sheet kraft paper, requires a weight of around 80g.
